Spam emails you get if you post something to Hacker News

Tags: spam, githubv6

A few days ago I posted githubv6 and also posted it to Hacker News, where it didn't get any traction, but some bots picked it up. Here's some of the spam I got.

Since the site is only accessible through IPv6, the only spambots I've seen are the ones that can use IPv6.

You can also tell the different ways they harvest contact addresses. The most common one is git@githubv6.com which was obviously extracted from the example Git remote address. The one that was sent to contact@ was probably by a human. One of them was sent to both, so probably a bot that doesn't stop on the first address.

Item #1: artificial social media profile bot

Notice the obviously incorrect grammar that comes from inserting the post title into a template.

Subject: A week of social for I made an IPv6 proxy for

Hi immibis2,

Saw I made an IPv6 proxy for GitHub on Hacker News. Nice ship.

One thing I've noticed after launches: it's not hard to write one post. The hard part is showing up every day after that, with posts, visuals, carousels, short videos, and something that actually fits the product.

That's what I'm building [product] for.

You add one topic, generate a full week of content, then export it to schedule in [product]. Posts, visuals, PDF carousel, slideshow with voiceover, and campaign angles for sales, awareness, or marketing. All from one place.

It's $10/month, less than a few coffees, and it can save you a week of messing around with social content.

Would you like me to create a sample week for I made an IPv6 proxy for GitHub (7 posts, visuals, and 1 short video) so you can see if the output is useful?

No signup needed. If it helps, great. If not, no worries.

Since this was the first one I got, I actually bothered to reply to it (mostly to ask how often this spam technique works) and got an apparently human-written reply back, basically saying that since I replied, it clearly worked, to which I replied again, saying I'm not giving you money, so how can it have worked, and they replied to that, saying they'll "take the engagement and retire undefeated" whatever that means.

To: git@githubv6.com - but their messages was missing a To: header, so I had to look at the Delivered-To inserted by my mail server.

I came across your website — looks great.

Just noticed one thing:
Your site isn’t fully optimized for search.

I’ve prepared a short report highlighting it.

Would you like me to send it?

Thank you

Item #6: SEO

I received two identical copies, one to contact@githubv6.com and one to git@githubv6.com, with no To: header, and identical Message-ID and Date.

This pattern appears in a lot of messages. Does this mean they used BCC?
